Bias in the prediction of genetic gain due to mass and half-sib selection in random mating populations Genet. Mol. Biol.
Viana,José Marcelo Soriano; Faria,Vinícius Ribeiro; Silva,Admilson da Costa e.
The prediction of gains from selection allows the comparison of breeding methods and selection strategies, although these estimates may be biased. The objective of this study was to investigate the extent of such bias in predicting genetic gain. For this, we simulated 10 cycles of a hypothetical breeding program that involved seven traits, three population classes, three experimental conditions and two breeding methods (mass and half-sib selection). Each combination of trait, population, heritability, method and cycle was repeated 10 times. The predicted gains were biased, even when the genetic parameters were estimated without error. Gain from selection in both genders is twice the gain from selection in a single gender only in the absence of dominance....

The objective of this study was to verify the accuracy of the Genome-Wide Selection (GWS) method in tropical maize breeding for root traits under conditions of nitrogen and phosphorus stress. Forty-one single-crosses were evaluated in two experiments. The first experiment considered low nitrogen availability, and the second experiment considered low phosphorus availability. A randomized block design with two replicates was used. The lateral and axial root lengths were measured using WinRhizo software. The analysis of deviance was calculated using the Restricted Maximum Likelihood/Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (REML/BLUP) method. Eighty microsatellite markers were used to genotype the estimation population. The Random Regression method was used to analyze...

Parametric and non-parametric indexes applied in the selection of sour passion fruit progenies Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Dalbosco,Edinéia Zulian; Krause,Willian; Neves,Leonarda Grillo; Araújo,Dejânia Vieira de; Hiega,Kemely Mara Ramalho; Silva,Cintia Graciele da.
Abstract Several traits must be observed in the selection of sour passion fruit progenies. For such, selection indices could be used for gradually increasing the frequency of favorable genotypes for the set of the traits of interest. This study aimed to compare parametric and non-parametric selection indices to be used in the selection of passion fruit progenies and identify the best economic weights. Thus, 118 full-sib families and three controls were assessed for days regarding flowering, productivity in kg ha-1 year, fruit mass in g, number of fruits, average length of fruits in mm, average fruit diameter in mm, fruit shape, average shell thickness in mm, pulp yield, pulp color, total soluble solids, titratable acidity and SS/ATT ratio. The...

Phenotypic, additive genetic and environment correlations of maize landraces populations in family farm systems Scientia Agricola
Barros,Luciane Bertoletti; Moreira,Rosângela Maria Pinto; Ferreira,Josué Maldonado.
Knowledge of the association between characters is very important in the genetic breeding programs, but there is limited information about correlations between traits in maize landraces in the current literature. The objectives of this study were to estimate phenotypic, additive genetic and environment correlations among traits in maize landraces, which were cultivated in family farm systems, in order to guide the participatory breeding on maize landraces. Between 294 and 400 half-sib progenies from the six populations were evaluated, subdivided in triple 7X7 and 10X10 lattice design, respectively, with single row plots of 4 m long and spaced 1.00 × 0.20 m. Estimates of correlation coefficients are reported for nine traits: grain yield (GY), relation grain...

Procedures for identification of superior progenies in successive generations of evaluation in common bean Scientia Agricola
Lemos,Roxane do Carmo; Abreu,Ângela de Fátima Barbosa; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto.
ABSTRACT: When breeding the common bean in Brazil, the best progenies are chosen, normally, from solely the generation under analysis at the conclusion of the evaluation, without considering what occurred in the past. However, a number of recently published studies show that if an evaluation were to consider all relevant generations, the gain from selection could be higher, especially when an index that involves information from the population that gave rise to the progenies is used. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare three selection procedures in the evaluation of successive generations and to discuss the implications of the progeny × environment interaction in terms of success of selection. Cycle XV progenies from a bean recurrent selection...

Quantitative variation in the tropical maize population, ESALQ-PB1 Scientia Agricola
Andrade,João Antonio da Costa; Miranda Filho,José Branco de.
Good yield and intermediate plant height, ear height, and tassel size characterize the maize population ESALQ-PB1 as an outstanding breeding population. Estimates of genetic parameters are reported for 13 traits: plant height (PH), ear height (EH), ear placement (EP), tassel length (TL), tassel weight (TW), tassel branch number (TB), ear weight (EW), total grain weight (GW), ear length (EL), ear diameter (ED), kernel row number (RN), kernel number per row (KR) and prolificacy (PR). Results refer to one location and one year. Genetic variation was detected for all traits, and the estimates of the additive genetic variance are presented. The coefficients of heritability (individual basis) varied from 0.14 to 0.72 and were considered high for PH, EH and TB;...

Seed controlled deterioration of three interspecific elephant grass × pearl millet hybrids R. Bras. Zootec.
Pozitano,Marina; Usberti,Roberto.
In order to allow using seeds from three interspecific elephant grass ×pearl millet hybrids (Original, Cutting and Grazing-types) to set pasture fields, it became necessary to analyze their performances in relation to storage conditions and controlled deterioration. Five moisture content levels and three storage temperatures (40, 50 and 65°C) have been tested for each hybrid. Seed sub samples for each moisture content and storage temperature combination were sealed in laminated aluminum foil packages and stored at those temperatures until complete survival curves have been obtained. The recurrent selection increased seed initial quality (Ki) for grazing-type population (lower and more tillered plants); however inverse results were observed for cutting-type...
